about

What are Gnossiennes? Satie made up the word to describe a new type of composition, and no one is sure what it means. And these pieces may not even be Gnossiennes! Numbers 1-3 are pretty well-known, and numbered by Satie himself. But 4-6 were published after his death, and he probably wouldn’t have considered them as part of a group.

Though written for piano, these have an extra resonance, depth, and beauty on the harp.

Erik Satie termed some of his later music “furniture music”; music designed to be in the background and not listened to consciously. It was a precursor to modern ambient and minimalist aesthetics. You can hear suggestions of that in these pieces where the harp floats between the noticeable liminal spaces and a dream-like background.

The most intriguing and delightful thing about playing this late 19th-century music - it is contemporary to my harp, which was built around 1893.

about

Rebecca Roth Portland, Oregon

My harp is over 100 years old. A harp gradually implodes over time. The soundboard bows out. The neck twists. The metal stretches. All this slow chaos is hidden beneath gilded gold and shiny lacquer.

I don’t know how much longer I will be privileged to play this particular instrument, and I think its age gives the sound its own patina and I’ve fallen in love with it.

I hope you enjoy it, too.
